First, I had the most bizarre Facebook encounter. You see, there is this boy, Chris, who I have known for 14 years. We both were the new students who arrived, awkwardly and shyly, at a new school during 7th grade. Well, that same year, his mother passed away from cancer. He was told in the hallway during class. It hit me hard. It was the first time it ever occurred to me that parents are not immortal. The solemn and ashen look on his face when he walked back into the classroom ten minutes later still haunts me to this day. Every single time I hear about a kid losing their mom or dad to a disease, I vividly remember Chris walking back into English class.
Well, throughout middle school and high school, Chris and I never spoke a word to each other. We sat next to each other in most of our classes because of the proximity of our last names in the alphabet. After graduation, he actually became extremely close friends of a girl I used to be extremely close friends with. They even moved to New Zealand together for a few years. When he returned in 2005, we became Facebook friends but never spoke on there either. Then, two days ago, for the first time EVER, we randomly started speaking to each other on Facebook. I discovered he was now a newspaper journalist, like me, but living in Colorado. He is a snowboarding champion. He has gained a really positive and spiritual outlook on life in the past 14 years. It made me sad I never really got to know him all those years ago.
Strange, isn’t it, how Facebook is making such an impact on our lives?

Then this week, another unusual occurrence shook me. I went to hang out with a close friend of mine, only to realize he was sober. I have not seen this guy sober in more than two years. Every time we hang out (which is a LOT), he is always already drunk or already stoned. Speaking to him, lucid, was a reality check. I was shocked to remember how intelligent and witty he is. I was instantly reminded of why we became friends in the first place. It was the most pleasant, but heartbreaking, experience.

And finally, the saddest and strangest thing that happened this week was the passing of my sister’s grandmother. You all might remember my sister, Jenn. I was in her wedding in November. I talked to her grandmother for a very long time at the reception and she seemed perfectly fine. She was young for her age, very sharp, and an absolute delight. I have always loved Jenn’s grandmother. I've known her since I was a kid. Apparently, she fell asleep this week and never woke up. Poor Jenn is absolutely heartbroken and shaken. So am I. It just came out of nowhere! So, please keep Jenn and her family in your thoughts and prayers, if you can.
So, that has been my week…I hope you have a good start to your weekend.
PS. I decided to give twitter another try. If you’re into that sort of thing, hit me up at @jenniferb02.

sorry to hear about Jenn's grandma! and yeah facebook is weird like that huh, the other day I came across the same thing except it was about a dude I had a crush on and he turned into a huge loser, so I guess I'd be the spiritual one in that relationship lol
That's a pretty transformative week. Let it sink in. There's probably a lot the Universe is telling you...
Annnnnddd I'll stop speaking in hippie speak now.
Facebook truly is an amazing phenom...anything that can enable us to connect with our pasts can be a good or bad thing... but I`m still addicted of course.
Facebook, gotta love it, right? So glad to hear about your friend being sober...that's fantastic. As for your sister's grandmother - I'm so sorry. That's never easy but at least there was no suffering, right? All in my thoughts!
wow thats so inspiring x

Thats so sad for her, poor thing.
By the way, The Old Guitarist is my favorite painting.
You have experience a week that gathers pretty much what life is about. We never now where the road will take us and yes, it does have some unexpected turns, but many times does turns are end up in a good place... and finally life is so fragile that we better enjoy every minute of it (of course while doing the right thing) because we don't know if we will have it next minute. There is no 'legal' age for dying.
Sorry for your sister's loss.

I think facebook is really great in meeting people again.

I totally know what you mean about Facebook... I've connected with people I barely talked to at all in high school. And I'm so sorry about Jenn's grandmother.

Very intersting read. It's sad how Jenn's grandmother simply passed away without being sick or anything. That's a huge shock! But, even if this sounds cheesy & won't take the pain away from Jenn, her family & you, she didn't have to suffer. That's a very good thing. I saw several people suffer a long time until they could go & it wasn't something I would want anyone to go through.
I'm not on Facebook, so i can't say anything about it. The reason i don't join is that I know there are people on there that I just don't want to have contact with, but I'm sure they would write me. So better to stay away fromt hat site *g*
It's so awesome that your friend has sobered up, hopefully he'll stay that way. Staying sober is very hard & an endless challenge.
Unfortunately, my best guy friend who I used to call my soulmate is going down the opposite road. He's suddenly always drunk/stoned or both & in a very bad mood. I tried to talk to him so often, but no way, he doesn't open up anymore. Makes me sad & helpless.
Anyways, that was quite the novel *lol* Have a great weekend :-)
have a great weekend!
ciao ave

Now your twitter follower, follow back if you like. Wow, that is a weird story but shoes how much smaller the world really is. Thanks for sharing this. Have a great weekend XOXO
What a weird week. Facebook is really interesting when it coes to people you don't know! I once met up with a friend that I hadn't seen in 12 years because she was visiting London, and it was great to catch up.
Sorry to hear about the grandmother!! Deepest condolences to the family.
Wow, what a strange week! It's been a weird week for me too. It's truly amazing that you and Chris have started talking and that he's become such a cool person. Also really wonderful that you talked to your friend sober. What a shock with your sister's Grandmother, I sned my sympathy! http://thearcenciel.blogspot.com/
did I ever say your blog entries always have a poignant edge? so sad that you never talked to this guy who you were in such close proximity to. Actually last week someone I had a big crush on at school found me on FB and it was weird because she was unrecognizable.
Wow.. Pretty inspiring! Love this post!
Facebook has it's bad points but then there are the good ones like that :)

Sounds like a difficult week :(
Sorry to hear about your sister's grandma thats so sad :( I like how facebook brings some distant friends back together xx
Amazing! Facebook can be a fantastic tool to get to know new people. My best friend and I got to know eachother because she mailed me on facebook before we moved to London. And now I can't imagine a life without her. All thanks to facebook.
Awww...I'm so sorry to hear about Jenn's grandmother. That's horrible. On the bright side, there were so many inspirational things that happened this week to outweigh such a tragedy. :)
I'm sorry to hear about your sister's grandmother. Sending light & love!
And there are some people who I wouldn't be otherwise speaking to also if it weren't for Facebook!
Jennifer, I'm so sorry to hear about Jenn's grandmother...and I totally agree about facebook. Isn't it strange how you stay connected to people of the past. Facebook can be bad and good in that way. Also so funny to think about how we were as students - how we never talked to people that sat right next to us. I can't tell you how many times that happened to me, mainly because I was shy but also because sometimes we just don't make the effort when we are young. We can't be to blame, it's just the phase of life that we are in, I think. How sad that he had such a big loss at such a young age. He went back into class??? Instead of going home? How horrible! - for the record Jennifer, I just want to say again that you have such a gift with writing. I'm amazed at your story-like ability to draw me right in as a reader.

Your week has sucked.
I'm sorry. :(
Facebook occurrences are really strange. I love finding old high school friends on there and watching how their lives have deteriorated while mine has taken off. I also love finding out that my old female enemies have gotten fat.

So sweat, great post!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, facebook! I never had any encounter like that one though. It's incredibly sad to hear the news of any friend whose family member has passed away and I'm glad that you were able to reconnect with him and found out they're having a great life! I will keep Jen in my prayers and please send her my hugs for me! xoxoxoo
Sorry to hear about your sister's grandmother. She sounds like a fine lady.
It's true, life gives us such strange experiences. But on a positive side, you seem to be so grounded and accepting of all your experiences.
Nice blog!
I love the first pic!
Follow me? I'd be very happy if you do it!
Thank you so much!

Wow, what interesting encounters/experiences you've had this week. It's resulted in a very reflective post about the relationships you had/have with these individuals.
My grandmother fell asleep, and never woke up - I was around 10 when that happened, and I remember how devastated my mom was. I was so shocked at her death, but now, working in health care and watching the pain and suffering that some people have to endure in their last days, I'm rethinking if how my grandma passed away was "bad."
its always great to hear that people we used to know have done better for themselves. unfortunately with people on my fb that i went to HS with theyve either become pregnant at a young age or something equally disturbing
finding you on twitter right after i post this and so sorry about your friend's loss, will be thinking of her! FB certainly does keep us updated, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's sad. hope your friend changes his ways and isn't so stoned - that's no fun! xoxo.
Thank you Jenny Benny for the thoughts and to everyone for the prayers. What a wonderfully supportive blog community :-) Trying to get back to some semblance of normalcy...love you my sister.
Wow........Deep reading.......I think I need to get in tch with some of my good friends who have reduced to just "facebook" friends now
