So, today at work...

The most bizarre thing happened at work today. I'm not sure what to make of it.

You see, a few months ago my company hired this temp to do secretarial stuff in the office. Her name is Linda and she is a middle-aged woman who always smiled shyly at everyone in the newsroom and kept to herself. I don't ever remember her talking before today. She was just quiet. A very motherly figure.

Well, this afternoon she went through the drive-thru at Wendy's for a baked potato, to bring it back to work for lunch.

When she got back to her desk and opened her potato, she gasped really loudly. She dropped the potato on the floor and started pointing at it, like it was a mouse.

"Th-th-they forgot sour cream!" she said. "Oh my god. They forgot to put sour cream on my baked potato."

She then started smashing her hand on her desk so loudly I thought my heart was going to stop.

"They forgot to put sour cream on my FUCKING BAKED POTATO!" she screamed, her face turning purple. "Those fucking Wendy's people forgot my FUCKING SOUR CREAM!"

And then she crumbled to the ground and started violently sobbing.

I was so stunned, I just sat there and watched. I was alone in the newsroom with her, so I was scared. An advertising executive rushed into the room to see what was going on. When I explained, he suggested that Linda go back to Wendy's to see if they could give her some sour cream or replace her order.

Linda didn't like that idea.

"WHY THE FUCK WOULD I GO BACK TO WENDY'S AFTER THEY FUCKING BETRAYED ME?" she shrieked at him. "I'M GOING TO FUCKING SUE THEM!"

She picked the baked potato off the floor and threw it in the trash can and left the office, muttering stuff about suing Wendy's. I stared at the advertising executive, with my mouth open, but he just shrugged casually, like going completely insane over sour cream was normal.

And that was it.

So, yeah.

If my life ever gets that unbearable, to the point where I'm going psycho over a baked potato, I want somebody to hit me over the head with a frying pan, just like they do in the cartoons.

Because I'll need it.

  1. What an experience. I would have not known what to do!!!

She should get fired for acting like that in the work place.

This post made my night. I laughed so hard. You have to let us know if she comes back on Monday.

She will probably go to McDonald's from now on; until they forget her chicken nuggets sauce cup. jejeej

    Buenos deseos,

  2. She is funny but she is scary. I know people who can't handle frustrations well, their emotional quotient is so low. Maybe she needs help. She maybe a functional autistic or something.

  3. OMG Is it bad that this post made me laugh hysterically? LOL What a great visual image. I want to watch a video of this on youtube now...

  4. Im sorry but Ohh dear that's hysterical!! I'd be petrified if i was there. Oh no. Um yeah I think you witnessed somebody going absolutely postal. Woaa... I think they don't even put it on the baked potato you have to ask for the lil packets. Geez. Maybe she's diabetic or forgot to take her medication maybe. I'd keep my distance from her. Ya never know when they might forget to put carrots in her side salad. =/

  5. omg Jennifer! I am totally laughing so hard I am crying. I feel bad though that I find humor in what was clearly a very difficult moment in her life. I wonder if its all dairy products that she feels so strongly about or is it sour cream. I will never look at a baked potato the same again.

    Have a great weekend.

  6. Seriously, I bet there are other things going on in her life that are stressing her out. This was just a little thing that probably added to it and set her off.

I can't imagine she's acted this way at work before, or she would be out the door by now.

    Still LMAO though.

  8. Wow. I wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face, to be honest!

I guess she's got other things going on, but still, there's a limit to what issues you should take into the workplace.

  10. Wow.. quite a reaction to something that doesn't really matter. Unfortunately, I can kind of go berserk over the little things too if I'm having a real shit day. But not over sourcream...jeez.

  11. First the logical comment: They give it to you in a little pouch so that you can put as little or as much as you want on it. it saves time and it's more sanitary, maybe she could have looked in her bag?

Now: WOW that's insane! I think perhaps that's a little bit of displaced anger? Maybe a bad divorce? Still holy crap how would you come to work again after something like that?

  12. That's actually really frightening. I think perhaps it's a sign that she needs some help - it seems like an emotional problem if you ask me. Personally, I always hope that they forget to give me sour cream...I can't stand they way it looks! :)

In all honesty though, something crazy must have been going on in her life for her to react that way.

  17. OH MY! Seriously Jennifer, you wrote this experience so well that I feel like I was actually there witnessing the sour cream meltdown. I love that blogger 'Iva' wondered if it was only Sour Cream or all dairy products that bring poor Sue to her knees. Holy!! Best laugh of the week!!
