Breakfast on Pluto

This is Cillian Murphy.

This is Cillian Murphy in the best role of his acting career.

I saw this film yesterday afternoon with my mom. We both thought it was incredible.

"Breakfast on Pluto" focuses on a starry-eyed transgender orphan, Patrick "Kitten" Braden, who goes on a journey to find her biological mother during the 1970s. Starting out in her hometown in Northern Ireland, the glam queen encounters one wacky adventure after another on her way to London, where her beautiful mother is rumored to live.

Set amidst political strife, this 2005 dramedy is not just a tale of self-discovery, but a portrait of sexuality. The world is not perfect. Humans are not cookie-cutter. Viewers of this film are forced to see the complexities of sexual identity.

Cillian's delicate performance as the heartbreakingly naive Kitten is a perfect demonstration of reality. Here is a man, who is all woman, and yet misunderstood by people who have no right to judge.

The impeccable acting in this film is not the only reason I adored it. Kitten is a fabulous character, often reminding me of myself.

Early on in the film, she falls innocently in love with the scruffy lead singer of a rock band.

She then randomly becomes a magician's assistant, just to be fabulous.

In self-defense, she does what any girl would do and nails her attacker square in the eyes with a spray of Chanel No. 5.

Best quote of the film? When Kitten purrs to a police officer, as she's being held in his arms, "If I wasn't a transvestite terrorist, would you marry me?"

(If you want to know the context of that quote, see the film. My lips are sealed!)

I'm going to warn you, the film is a tad slow in the beginning, but if you appreciate a good film, it won't make any difference to you.

And don't worry about any graphic content. While Kitten is very flirtatious and sexual, she doesn't so much as even kiss another character on screen. I was surprised.

Honestly, I feel Cillian should have gotten an Oscar for his performance, but he wasn't even nominated. He did win the 2007 IFTA award for best actor, however, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe for the film as well.

Hopefully, it is a film that will help educate people on transgender life and make our world a little more understanding.

After all, it's easy to be prejudiced when you're kept in the dark.

  34. OMG! One of my favorite movies! I don't run into many people who've seen it either which is a pity: acting is amazing, and the movie itself creme de la creme. Thanks for posting about it. Neil Jordan rocks!

  36. Having been thoroughly fucked by a guy three times with one at a gay bath house and realizing the third time that I loved licking girls, I had answered all of my questions. Sexuality is not categorical but dimensional. People can be primarily one thing and identify with the part they are most of. My gay friend Joel who I told about the guy said just because you did this you are not gay. And you like that thing I think is gross!! Yuck!! You can't be one of us. Villain should have gotten an Oscar. Liam Neeson's priest father is masterful as is Murphy's performance. Such a beautiful movie. Great job. Peter Flynn
