Polish Movie Posters

Most movie posters in the United States are downright boring.

They show the movie stars and share a cheesy catch-phrase or perhaps a one-liner from a movie reviewer.

The brilliant people in Poland, however, do things a little more fabulously.

Movie posters in Eastern Europe are artwork. The creators put so much heart and soul and hard work into them, the results are astounding.

They create movie posters which belong in art museums, much less movie theaters.

Some of the movie posters are obvious and others are conceptual, illustrating the soul of the film as a puzzle which needs to be carefully unraveled.

I recently stumbled upon the website, Polish Posters Shop, which features hundreds of these phenomenal treasures. I think they would make perfect decoration for any home or office.

Here are my favorites:

There were many posters which I found perplexing, yet stunning. A simple glance at the poster does not reveal which film is being portrayed.

Can you guess the movie?

The answers are:

Weekend at Bernie's
Fatal Attraction
Flipper
Breakfast at Tiffany's

Did you get any of those right? Do you prefer these movie posters over American posters?

  1. These are amazing, they'd look so beautiful framed in a modern apartment. I love that they add much more depth, intrigue and artistry to the film. Head over heels for that Dumbo one - it's darling! What an interesting post. x

  2. Really creative! I love how they take and make it so incredibly artistic. Love the Polish ones! One of my favourites who first did posters was Toulouse Le Trec!

I was able to guess Fatal Attraction and Breakfast at Tiffany's, although I must confess, I only guessed Fatal Attraction because the actors' names were at the bottom!

  26. Goodness me, the Polish artists must be on drugs when they paint these posters. If you think Polish poster art is nuts you should see the state of Pakistani movie posters - scary stuff.

  31. I want these framed in my place. American posters SUCK...it's unfortunate because we have so many talented artist here, but film companies want these glossy celebrity-driven posters that are boring and uninspired.

I am loving the Cabaret and Ghandi posters.

  37. Movie posters in the U.S. are so stupid and boring. They all look the same! All you need to do is replace the different actors' heads with other actors' heads and BAM -- same thing. The U.S. needs to turn more Polish. Maybe more people would go to the movies, then.
Oh, and lower the movie ticket prices. That would also help.

Thank you for your super sweet comment on my blog! It isn't easy to be strong about my condition all the time, but I do my best. I don't see the point of wallowing in negativity or feeling sorry for myself because that does not accomplish anything. I try not to let anything bring me down, including a chronic disease. I am deeply flattered that you referred to me as an inspiration, though. :) <3

  47. Some of these remind me of the more intricate concert posters you sometimes see. I love the idea of illustrated movie posters though (like back in the day). So wish they rest of the world would still do them! The second set is definitely bizarre. Never would have guessed Fatal Attraction or Weekend at Bernies...
