The nightmare never ends

I might not be his biggest fan. I might not care about the music. But when I read his journals, it's like watching my own pain dance recklessly in front of a dirty mirror. And that scares me.

The duty of youth is to challenge corruption.

If it's illegal to rock and roll, then throw my ass in jail.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I really haven't had that exciting of a life. There are a lot of things I wish I would have done, instead of just sitting around and complaining about having a boring life. So I pretty much like to make it up. I'd rather tell a story about somebody else.

Punk is musical freedom. It's saying, doing and playing what you want. In Webster's terms, 'nirvana' means freedom from pain, suffering and the external world, and that's pretty close to my definition of punk rock.

I was looking for something a lot heavier, yet melodic at the same time. Something different from heavy metal, a different attitude.

I am not gay, although I wish I were, just to piss off homophobes.

My generation's apathy: I'm disgusted with it. I'm disgusted with my own apathy too, for being spineless and not always standing up against racism, sexism and all those other -isms the counterculture has been whining about for years.

If you're really a mean person you're going to come back as a fly and eat poop.

There's good in all of us and I think I simply love people too much, so much that it makes me feel too fucking sad.

Birds scream at the top of their lungs in horrified hellish rage every morning at daybreak to warn us all of the truth, but sadly we don't speak bird.

Wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are.

Nobody dies a virgin. Life fucks us all.

  3. I'm so glad you did a post about him. I love Nirvana. I've only quoted Kurt once on my blog. I feel like something like what you did really makes people stop and pay attention not only to how he was, but about the past, present, and future in all of us. He was WAY ahead of his time.

    RIP Kurt Cobain

  9. Ms. Fabulous, you’re a teenager of the ‘90s. I know this because I’ve mentioned it on your blog. This means you’re a “gen-x’er”: a generation of youth that was completely fixated on the notion of authenticity. You were an age group that worked hard but didn’t like showing how hard you were working to get where you are because that wasn’t the cool thing to do. Also, you didn’t want to be ‘sell-outs’, hence why Cobain appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wearing a T-shirt saying ‘Corporate magazine sucks!’

What I wonder is whether there was a great level of duplicity on the part of most kids buying into the ‘generation-x’ pursuit of ‘keeping things real?’ I do believe Cobain was a conflicted figure who wanted to have his cake and eat it, but I don’t deny that his true intentions for creating thoughtful music were genuine. His music actually had something to say, which a world away from what exists now.

Nowadays the whole desire to be genuine has been superseded by absolute artifice. Grunge was replaced with bling. The same kids that harked on about ‘truth’ are now flashing the latest i-Phones and spraying pepper spray into the eyes of fellow consumers at yesterday’s black Friday sales all because they wanted material goods. (We saw it on the British news channels and were agape.)

In short, wasn’t Cobain as big a sell out as everyone else of his generation?

  13. I always wished he had gotten help instead of marrying someone who probably helped him carry on his difficult existence.

Help seems like it's hard to find, but honestly, it's the first step that's the hardest...

  14. I'm not into this music either. But I've always been a fan of him. 27 was simply too young!

  15. I hadn't really read anything he wrote (other than his lyrics) but it makes me sort of ache to read what people who are in sort of despair feel. This is a really good post!

  19. Kurt Cobain was crazy, dark, insane, weird, awesome, a genius ... No wonder his quotes are so great. I love Nirvana, and I love his weird-ass lyrics. There will only ever be one Kurt Cobain.

  21. I've always been a HUGE Nirvana fan. I was in high school during their short time at the top. His death (and OD a few months before) was one of those 'remember exactly where you were' moments.

As good as their music was and as interesting a person as he was, I think his legend definitely grew because his death was so tragic and he was so young.

It's funny how a band like the Foo Fighters has been around so much longer and has been so much more successful, but history will never come close to remembering them the way it'll remember Nirvana.
