Hollywood Brats, Not So Hollywood Life

Last week, I wrote up a very sarcastic and undoubtedly witty guest post about Tom Hanks' fame-hungry son-turned-rapper.

Fortunately, I've discovered a few celebrity sons who are the complete opposite. They are not interested in the red carpet. They could care less they are spawned from Hollywood royalty. They want to change the world and pursue their passions on their own, without any help.

Let me introduce you to three anti-Hollywood children of the stars:

Woody Allen and Mia Farrow's child prodigy

His famous parents defined Hollywood in the 1970s, but Ronan Farrow has no desire to grace the big screen. The 24-year-old is a genius. Seriously. He got accepted into Bard College when he was 11 and graduated at 15. He graduated Yale Law School at 21.

Since leaving school, Ronan has worked as a special advisor to Hillary Clinton, specifically focusing on the youth issues in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also served as a UNICEF spokesperson from 2001 to 2009. He most recently was named a Rhodes Scholar.

Unfortunately, Ronan and his father are completely estranged. The two stopped speaking when Woody Allen left Mia Farrow for her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi in 1992.

Warren Beatty and Annette Benning's human rights activist

The transgender daughter of this Hollywood power couple is not just a human rights activist, but also a blogger. Kathlyn Beatty, or Stephen Ira, as he prefers to be called, is an east coast college student legitimately trying to make a difference in the world.

His blog Super Mattachine Review is a well-written collection of anti-racist and pro-queer essays and thoughts.

In his own words, "I have plans: overthrow oppressive forces, destroy rape culture, smash cissexism, demolish transphobia, rip apart ableism, fuck up whiteness and racism, stomp on sizeism, knit lace curtains. I’m going to end cissexism. Hang on, this might take a minute."

Denzel Washington's football star

Denzel's handsome 27-year-old son is the running back for the Sacremento Mountain Lions football team.

Although his father is one of the most famous movie stars in Hollywood, John David Washington never once wanted to be an actor. He dreamed of being a football player since he was a child. The athlete set school football records as a student at Morehouse College and went on to be signed by the St. Louis Rams upon graduation.

John and his father are extremely close, with Denzel being more involved in his son's life than most non-celebrity parents. He attends every single one of his son's football games, cheering for him on the sidelines and groaning at referees, like a typical dad. I think it's safe to say Denzel is extremely proud of his son.

What do you think of these anti-Hollywood kids?

  2. They rock-its simple-we need more great stories about kids like that. And yeah Denzel's son is a hottie but of course hehehehe Ronan is a genius, hence why he doesnt speak to his dad-he knows hes not worth it. Stephen's former name Kathleen I believe was Warren's mothers name-it was difficult for him to lose that but he is super supportive and we need more parent examples like that. Fantastic post-loved every word!! xox

  5. I love this post! I'm just blown away by the achievements of Ronan Farrow and John Washington. They're rare amongst the Hollywood crowd whose offspring have turned to drugs.

  6. Well, good for all of them. So many of these Hollywood kids turn out as messed up as their parents and just try to hitch a free ride! There are the genuinely talented ones, of course, like Michael Douglas, but... I enjoyed reading about these three. I did not know them, and that is a good sign. Great piece, Jenny. 7. Can you imagine Denzel as a father? What was that movie...where he takes a hospital as hostage?

I always wished that guy was my dad. Sigh...

And dang! Ranon is awesome. And...I would be competely estranged from my father too. Can you imagine?! I mean...ugh. Allen is my favorite director, but...no.

  9. Ronan seems like my kind of guy. Too bad he's a baby and I'm in a committed and loving marriage huh?

Again, thanks for my daily Hollywood (or not so Hollywood) insight.

And now I want to recreate Beaty's picture with my little Tay. So sweet.

  10. These are the people who probably don't get the attention they should, while we're all busy worrying about the Kardashians...

They're all great stories and a fantastic post.

It almost makes me want to forgive Denzel for being a Lakers fan.....almost.

  15. I had no idea about Woody Allen leaving Mia Farrow for her daughter!? What the crap. I kinda hate Soon-Yi now. That's cool about Denzel's son not using his dad to get instantly famous!

  20. Whoa whoa whoa. Hold the phone, he left her for her adopted daughter? What the hell? That's just foul. I was just talking about celebs who marry non celebs and how much I appreciate it when I have no idea who their spouse is. No matter what, these people are still human and I can totally respect it when their spouses and children want to lead a normal life (sans Chet). Good for Woody's son.

  21. So interesting! When so many others are dying to be reborn as a star parents' child and take the easy way to be in limelight, these star kids are actually pursuing a dream beyond the world of glitz and glamour! Thanks hon for your lovely comment!
