Snail Mail



Sometimes I feel like a dinosaur.

I have vivid memories of mailing letters. Snail mail was a major part of my life before I became "sassyangel@hotmail.com" when I was 14. (Yes, that was my first e-mail. No, I don't use it anymore).



When I was a little girl, I used to help my mom decorate letters to her sisters. Sometimes she would let me draw flowers or balloons on the envelopes. She always allowed me to sprinkle her favorite perfume on the pages. I was enthralled by this process, when I was four-years-old. Creating something beautiful and watching it disappear into a box seemed like magic.



A few years later, I started writing letters of my own, to cousins and long-distance friends. Since I was an ugly duckling who wasn't very popular as a child, my letters were mostly sarcastic, with random short stories and dry observations included. My friends and relatives loved my sense of humor and encouraged me to continue writing. I did.



And then e-mail took over, all of the sudden. I remember my dad asked me to come over to the computer after we got internet so he could show me how to use the Alta Vista search engine and create my first hotmail account through MSN.

And that was the beginning of the end.



Now, after all these years, I wish I could go back in time.

Letters were so personal, so much more real. You could sleep with a love letter under your pillow. You could store letters from friends in a special box. Reading them, clutching them in your hands, brought back memories from a forgotten past.

Why can't we have that again?



I want to lovingly craft a memory which someone will cherish forever. I want to tell them news they won't hear on Facebook or in a text.

I want to sprinkle Chanel No. 5 on a rose-colored envelope and watch it disappear into a mailbox, not caring how it got there, only knowing that it would.



That would be nice.

The Dinner Party



My darling Jonny came to town again for the weekend! We are having lots of fun but I just had to show off one event in particular which epitomizes why I love this man so much.

He is absolute class.

On Saturday evening, Jonny prepared an Italian dinner party. It was spectacular. He's like the freaking male Martha Stewart or something.

Romantic music filled the air. The fragrance of fresh flowers hit our noses from every angle. Cocktails and wine were on hand. Champagne was flowing.

And the food. Oh my god. The food. Jonny and his father spent all afternoon cooking a five-course meal. Hot pepper jam. Gourmet cheese. Hummus. Basil tomato flatbread pizza. Strawberry spinach salad. Greek olives. Angel hair pasta and tomatoes drizzled olive oil. Chicken Parmesan. Cannolis. Grapefruit sorbet with fresh blackberries.

Um, yeah.

It was ridiculous.

After the meal, we sat around and chatted for a couple hours. Jonny was the perfect host, always making sure drinks were refilled and that a lovely time was being had by all.

I had not seen our mutual friend John (pictured below) in two years, so we had a lot of catching up to do! We also played with Jonny's new beagle puppy, Schmooey.





Good wine, good food, good friends. It was one of the loveliest evenings I have had in a very long time.

Happy Friday, lovelies!

As you may remember, my best friend Jonny has an album coming out next year. The past couple months have been a whirlwind for him, as he prepares for the release.

Last week he had a professional photoshoot in New York City for the album artwork.

Since I'm his bff, he gave me a sneak peak of the sexy photos.

And that means I get to share them with you!

Like, as if!


When I was in sixth grade, my best friend Megan and I were desperate to see the hottest new movie in theaters, called Clueless.

The radio ads and television commercials were promoting the film like crazy and as 11-year-olds, we were dizzy with excitement and anticipation from all the hype.



We begged our parents on a daily basis to let us go to the film. Our parents even met each other over dinner to discuss whether or not they should allow us to go.

The verdict: Absolutely not.

Apparently the movie talked about "sex" and showed "drug use" or some shit.



Meg & I were crushed. We listened in misery as our older friends, in eighth grade, bragged about seeing the film with their boyfriends.



But our parents' disapproval didn't stop Meg & I from buying the film as soon as it hit VHS a year later. It wasn't too late. The top television show at the time was Clueless, so the movie was still a pretty big deal.



For three years straight, I went to middle school dressed as Cher. Pleated skirts. Feather pens. Mini backpacks. Mary Janes. I was a girl obsessed. I even had a Clueless-themed 13th birthday party!



I watched that movie every single day after school and on weekends. I am not exaggerating when I say I've seen that film over 100 times and to this day (although I have not watched it in a decade) I can recite the entire film by heart, quote by quote.



"Do you know what time it is?" "A watch doesn't really go with this outfit, Daddy..."

"So, what did you do in school today?" "Well, I broke in my purple clogs!"

"What the hell is that?" "A dress!" "Says who?" "Calvin Klein."

"Do you prefer 'fashion victim' or 'ensembly challenged'?"

"I'd like to see you have a little direction." "I have direction!" "Yeah, towards the mall..."




It was a movie that changed my life. That movie helped me blossom from a little girl who liked to dress up to a teenager obsessed with fashion.

Unbelievable, right? I would kill to have her entire wardrobe even now, almost 20 years later.

And imagine how excited I was to learn that my childhood film is being turned into a Broadway Musical this year. Click here for more information.

Reflections



I just want to thank everyone for the kind comments regarding my post from a couple days ago, I'm Hiring!.

I say this a lot, because it is true, but I am incredibly blessed to have so many wonderful and close friends in the blogging community. In the past two and a half years, I have gained some important people in my life (you know who you are) who have helped me get through the good times and the bad (mostly bad).

Creating a blog was the best decision I have ever made in my life, for that reason.

I think that is why it absolutely stuns me that bloggers like Chrissy exist in the blogosphere.

Here is a little online world, so full of love and acceptance and support, yet so many bloggers do not take advantage of it. They do not try to get to know other bloggers. What a shame! What a waste!

Well, it is their loss.

I often marvel at how easy it has been to make such close friends through blogging, when I can barely meet someone halfway decent in my own city.

I actually wasn't joking about wanting to "hire" a friend.

I'm not happy here in the real world.

In the past five years since graduating college, I've noticed my circle of friends dwindle down to nothing. Most of my friends moved across the nation or out of the country.

Others revealed their true backstabbing colors.

And now I'm left with a handful of people who don't seem to have much in common with me anymore.

Making friends after college is an incredibly frustrating experience.

There are the late 20-somethings who never want to grow up. They still live in frat-like houses and hold wild parties and only look forward to getting shit-faced drunk or high, because they have nothing else meaningful in their lives.

There are the boring career-climbers who are obsessed with their jobs and might be able to meet up for drinks with you at yuppie bar after work, but end up canceling because they just have SO MUCH WORK.

There are the young mothers, who don't really want to spend time with you because they can no longer relate to someone who hasn't spawned a child. So they cluck with their fellow mother hens about play dates and potty training and breast-feeding.

It just seems like I can't meet someone who is even remotely like me. Even though I know they exist. You are proof.

I just want to meet a friend in this town who enjoys curling up with a Jane Austen novel and a glass of wine on a rainy night. I want to meet a friend who loves history and learning about different cultures. I want to meet a friend who doesn't mind getting getting a little wild after a few drinks. I want to meet a friend who is fabulous.

I am already that girl.

Parody of a Fashion Blogger

Hello fashionistas!

So here I am, guest posting on "I Know, Right?"! Lucky you!!

Let me introduce myself, although all of you should already know me. I'm Chrissy, an attractive 18-to-25-year-old who has the hottest fashion blog of the week called 2 Haute 4 U.



I dress very hip and sophisticated, so most of my followers are a bit intimidated by me, and honestly, I don't blame them. I rock.

I started my blog two months ago and I already have 1,239 followers! Besides spamming every fashion blog I come across ("Nice post! FOLLOW ME!"), I don't really have anything else to justify my success other than me just being gorgeous! (That, and I created 850 fake Blogger profiles to follow my blog).

You may notice that my outfit photos look like fashion editorials. It's because my boyfriend is a professional photographer. He loves taking photos of me because I'm hot and I love having my photo taken because I'm hot. So starting a fashion blog was like destiny for me! I'm so pretty.



You may also notice I only wear the latest couture designer clothes and shoes. And yes, it IS true: I do own 58 Louis Vuitton bags. *blushes*

If I wear anything older than 2010, I label it vintage, and if I happen to be wearing something from Urban Outfitters, I just call it "thrifted" because it sounds better. After all, I need working class girls like you to feel like you can relate to me, but I would never actually step foot into a thrift store, let's be real.



Some of my followers have asked me how I manage to afford a $1,000 per week wardrobe since I clearly don't have a job. It's because my other boyfriend (the married one) is an investment banker and he buys me whatever I want. Jealous much?

Did you see the 14 new ads on my blog that kind of make it difficult for you to access the site? I have a lot of banners and pop-up ads because I like money. Plus, I think it makes me look really professional. I'm sorry for the clutter. (I'm not sorry).



Oh, and if you're wondering why I don't show much personality on my blog, it's because I don't have one.

Anyway, I'm already starting to receive personal invitations to New York Fashion Week and movie premieres and other events in New York City. It won't be long before I'm simply way too cool to even look at anyone else's blog, so you better talk to me while you can. Because give me one more month and I will be like, "bitch, please. Blogger who?"
