I think we all know that I'm the go-to person for all things fabulous.
I mean, let's be real.
So, take my word when I say the most fabulous television show in the world is....
...That Girl!
Before Sex & The City and Friends, there was That Girl. It was the first television show centered around a 20-something-year-old single girl trying to make it on her own in the Big Apple.
I discovered this 1960s gem when I stumbled upon it at an antiques mall six months ago. Intrigued, I bought the entire series on DVD. To say I am obsessed with this show is an understatement. I want to LIVE this show.
The main character, Ann Marie, played by the gorgeous and funny Marlo Thomas, is pretty much my idol right now. She's charming and bubbly. She lives in a tiny apartment, waitressing and doing other odd jobs, as she tries to make it as an actress. She has a handsome journalist boyfriend, Don, who is pretty much the perfect guy. Her parents are strict, yet understanding. She is awkward, yet graceful.
And then there are her clothes.
The fashion in this television show is jaw-dropping. Honestly, while the show is absolutely adorable and comedic, it is pretty much a 30-minute fashion show.
The stylish opening credits, featuring Marlo in stunning dresses and coats, underline the show's obsession with clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and makeup. Her wardrobe consisted of the latest fashion from the most famous designers and fashion houses of the time period, including Cardinali, Halston, Courreges, and Oscar de la Renta.
That Girl made Marlo a household name and one of the greatest fashion icons of the 1960s.
Her character, Ann Marie, was even turned into a Barbie Doll!
And paper dolls!
The show was such a huge success, it paved the way for television shows such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Murphy Brown, Sex & The City, and Friends (in which Marlo plays Rachel's mom).
Despite the drool worthy clothes and hilarious plot lines, the show has an important message.
Women can be independent. They should follow their dreams. And although success is a sweet reward, it's getting there that is half the fun.
I hope you had a great weekend. ♥

There are so many shows from the 60s and 50s that were so fashion-forward that people don't even know exist. Marlo looked incredible on this show and the costume changes were insane. The character always reminded me of Audrey Hepburn, with a little more spunk!

Omg this show sounds amazing!! The clothes look gorgeous too! I love old TV shows, and can't believe I have never seen this one. I'm so glad you shared it with us, and I agree completely with the message! Women can be independent and work hard for their dreams, and when you said that getting to the top is half the fun, you are so right! Once you reach success, you will appreciate it all the more when you have worked hard for it.
Much Love Jennifer, and happy Tuesday.

ps. I'm glad my Monday post was able to cement our status as best-bloggy friends :)
I haven't seen this show, but now I have to! For the fashion alone, I have to watch this show! I LOVE the clothes--everything so tailored and elegant, yet sexy. Those are the best clothes, in my book--the sexy, but still classy.
I'm seriously excited about watching this now!!! I love characters like this--so easy to relate and fun to watch!
Is that Sally Field?
You Americans seem efortlessly glam.
I have never seen this show.
The only way I can relate to it is through the TV show "Friends." Phoebe wore a shirt in "The One with the Football" that said, "That Girl."
I get it now.
Why do I suck so much at life, sometimes?

I generally don't even LIKE old shows and movies. To be honest, I don't like most things made before 1990 (how awful is that, right? I know there are some great pre-1990 movies, but...I dunno...meh). But now I'm actually considering looking for That Girl. Apparently you're a good salesperson!
i havent see this show on tv. maybe because i live in the Netherlands? i don't know..but i really like to see it!
thanks for your comment! x
That Girl sounds like so much fun. To say I love Ann Marie's hair and clothes is an understatemen. :)SArahD
Oooo, sounds amazing. I'm so unemployed, that'm looking to discover more tv shows. This does sound fabulous.

I love your film/TV series reviews :-) I hadn't heard of that show to be honest & I'm not sure if it ever made it to German TV. It sounds interesting & I love the clothes! I don't know why, but she reminds me a bit of Emma Peel from "The Avengers".
Gotta google to seeif I can watch it online!
this sounds like a great series! I'll have to look for it. Love your blog :) stay fab!

What a classy lady! She reminds me of one of the Kennedy's with her style!
I ADORE THAT GIRL and I ADORE Marlo Thomas!!! I discovered this show on reruns in the 80s but not till last year did I manage to get the series on DVD. SO COOL to see I am not the only one whos totally obsessed with the best tv show ever made!! Great post!! :)
George Carlin played her agent Seymor on 'That Girl.' Fun show!
Ann Marie was pretty much the perfect girlfriend that every guy wanted. She was strong and vulnerable, sexy and prude, independent and dependent. But most of all she was ENDEARING. And even as a guy (who DOESN'T cross-dress, LOL...) I loved her clothes.
Okay, I'm going to agree with you million percent. I was a little kid and watched That Girl in either its last year ('1971') or in repeats. I loved it so much and recently rediscovered it on Hulu. As an adult, I am simply DROOLING over her clothes--what amazing clothes! An actress struggling to make it in NYC would never afford those things and her huge (for NY) apartment but hey this is our fantasy. I always admired Ann Marie and wished I could live her live. I still do at age 50.
My older sister adored this show and still idolizes Marlo Thomas. In 8th grade even got her hair to look like Ann Marie's for her school picture. We had the That Girl paper dolls and my sister would design extra clothes for the paper doll-- I got to color them and cut them out. At some point Marlo Thomas quit wearing a bra on the show and that caused tension between my mother and my sister! I rematched the shows recently and agree, her clothes are incredible. And the message is great.
