Top 5 Horror Films You Probably Haven't Seen

There are a gazillion horror films out there. And I'm not gonna lie, I've seen most of them.

This Halloween, I'm going to be snuggling on the couch with my boyfriend and pigging out on junk food, with my eyes glued to the screen while we watch scary movies. To me, that is the perfect way to celebrate on a chilly fall night.

In honor of Halloween, I've decided to list five horror films I think you should know exist. You're not going to see The Exorcist or Scream on here, because this isn't a boring list. It's an awesome list.

Let's start, shall we?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956): Best classic horror film

Body Snatchers takes place in a picturesque 1950s world where martinis after work are mandatory and everybody is perfect...or are they?

The plot centers around Dr. Bennell, who returns home to discover many of his patients fear their loved ones are impostors. He decides to investigate the complaints and comes to a shocking discovery.

Not only is this an entertaining horror film, it also perfectly embodies the atmosphere 1950s America was facing at the time: fear of outsiders and fear of government repression.

Teeth (2007): Weirdest horror film

This film is about a girl with a killer pussy.

And I'm not talking about a cat.

It focuses on a coming-of-age girl who has teeth in her you-know-what.

Now, you're probably thinking Teeth is X-rated and a cheap trick. But it's not! This film is actually quite modest, given it's content, and it is a really good film. Not so-bad-it's-good, but good good!

You are just going to have to trust me. I will say no more.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006): Most beautiful horror film

This magical dark fairytale is so visually stunning, it is jaw-dropping.

The plot revolves around a young girl living in post-fascist Spain. She meets a fairy who tells her she is a princess, but in order to claim her crown, she needs to complete three gruesome tasks.

Words cannot describe how much I adore this whimsical, breathtaking horror film.

It is a must-see.

The Last House on the Left (1972): Most realistic horror film

Do not watch this movie.

I had the misfortune of not knowing what The Last House on the Left was about before I saw it. I was completely repulsed, shocked, and dismayed. When this film came out in theaters, during the early 1970s, many audience members fainted and some even had heart attacks. It is still banned in several countries to this day. It's that awful.

But I'm very serious when I say that I will not hesitate to show my teenage daughter this film one day. It is the best after-school special in the world.

Leprechaun (1993): Stupidest horror film

I'm not sure what makes this movie scarier: the cheesy dialogue or Jennifer Aniston's old nose. JUST KIDDING. Jennifer Aniston's film debut is a treat for viewers of this Irish-inspired gem.

The plot focuses around a severely unattractive and evil Leprechaun who goes on a killing spree to find his beloved pot of gold.

This movie is so bad, it's delicious. When I was in high school, my best friend Allison and I had Leprechaun sleepovers, where we stayed up all night watching all his dirty little adventures. In the sequels, the silly little fellow goes on killing sprees in "the hood," Las Vegas, New York City, and even outer space!

Will you see any of these films on Halloween night?

I hate horror films (I'm the biggest cry baby ever!) so will be using the holiday as an excuse to eat sweets instead!

I've seen 3 out of the 5 movies you listed (Teeth, Pan's Labyrinth, the Leprechaun). I definitely agree that Teeth was the weirdest horror film I've seen...and a little disturbing.

Good choices, especially the first one. I prefer films that scare you psychologically instead of with gore. The scariest TV show of all time was "Night Gallery", by Rod Sterling.

Ohh I soo want to watch teeth...the first line in the description just killed me! And I am so happy you like Pan´s Labyrinth..astounding visuals and a great movie as well! I dunno what I´ll be doing but I´m guessing watching horror movie marathons and eating candy like there´s no tomorrow!

Ha, I love horror movies...and I've seen Teeth before. Very weird, weird doesn't even describe it. Haha! However, too many horror movies at once it just too much for me. Hahaha. :)

Happy Halloween weekend.

I've seen all of these--not sure what that says about me, lol. And your assessment of the original Last House on the Left is spot on. I think they remade it a couple years ago, but I didn't see that one.

I've always been afraid of Last House on the Left - I hear it's probably one of the worst ones out there - and I can barely deal with horror films with a PG13 rating...

I am never m, ever seeing "house on the left" (thanks for the warning!). My husband and I saw "pan's labyrinth" on our third date but the film is special for all the other reasons you listed below.

I'm the biggest baby about horror movies... So I tend to go for Hocus Pocus and Double, Double, Toil and Trouble on Halloween. Yep, I'm eight years old.

I am THE BIGGEST baby when it comes to horror movies, I just cant watch them. I run out of the room even if scary movie previews come up as they freak me out too much. My poor bf loves horror movies though so I always feel bad I cant watch them with him. Sounds like a perfect halloween though :)

I adore Pan's Labyrinth, such a beautifully scary film. x

I like Poltergeist.

What I hate most of Pan's Labyrinth is that all spanish films tend to put civil war in the film, very tired of it, really, but nice film.

So I just went on Wikipedia and read the plot of Last House on the Left. And I am NEVER watching that movie. Never. I like scary movies, but I can't watch graphic rape scenes. They make me want to throw up and then I can't sleep at night. So yeah, that one's going high on my list of Movies to Never Watch. Pan's Labyrinth was a visually stunning movie. So beautiful!

I haven't seen any of these films before; I guess I stick to the norm - Halloween, Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. :P

I have never seen any of these! My bf wants to see Teeth, and I'm still on the fence.
My father used to joke about LHOTL, (because we used to live at a house where we WERE the last one on the left) but, judging by your description of the movie, I'm thinking that he wasn't so funny. I'll Wikipedia the movie, 'cause that's as close as I'll ever get to it.
Or, all of these. Lol. I can't do blood, violence or murder... I can do psychological though!

BTW I literally LOL'd with your review of Teeth. haha

great tips, I've only seen one of these but I wanted to get a scary movie for tonight!

Happy Halloween!

You know Jenny I haven't seen any of these films. I somehow cannot sit through a horror film. But because you recommend some of these, I'll try and watch short clips on YouTube!

THE EXORCIST is boring? Really?

TEETH did me in. I've always felt uncomfortable with the concept of vagina dentata. I think it's a guy thing.

Teeth sounds awesome. I wonder if that's what Nine Inch Nails had in mind when they wrote the song "With Teeth"? LOL!

I've seen Leprechaun a few times. It's hilarious you made a little shout out to Jen Aniston's old nose lol. Celeb plastic surgery fascinates me. You've heard of awfulplasticsurgery.com, right? My friend told me about it in high school after I told him Lindsay Lohan's boobs were real. To my surprise, they are not!

Have a happy Monday and a safe Halloween!

Teeth is such a funny movie...so is Leprechaun. I also really love Insidious and Treat or Treat (little seen but an awesome Halloween movie). But my true love really is the Exorcist (also my costume this year).

You are a very brave girl. Just the combination of the words "horror" and "movie" causes me to tremble and sweat. I had an attempt to watch Batman. Even that proved too much.

stylenuggets said...

I've heard of Invasion of the Body Snatchers but not of the others. They sound deliciously awful and creepy!

Jaime @ laviejaime said...

i am SOOO not a scary movie person. can't even watch scream lol. happy halloween!

Meri said...

I really liked Pan's Labyrinth. For obvious reasons (avoiding nightmares) I better not tell the boyfriend about "teeth" haha

Bonnie said...

ohmygosh. So I have seen way too many scary movies because of one of my exes (ugh), even though I hate scary movies with a passion because I am incapable of sleeping afterwards. I literally lay awake in my bed, thinking about the movie and believing that all of those things could happen to me. When I close my eyes and try to sleep, I think that something could sneak up on me, so I open my eyes, and then the whole cycle starts over.
