Why I Don't Use Twitter

As my twenties go by, the biggest lesson in life I have learned is that time fucking FLIES.

You quickly discover that days are incredibly short. An hour? It feels like a minute. It's a frightening feeling to wake up one morning and realize there is simply not enough time in the day to do all the things you want to do.

And my generation is the guinea pig of this life discovery, mixed in with the revolution of the Internet.

Because not only does time fly for us in real life, it shoots by us from all angles in the virtual world. It's mind-boggling.

My head is racing all day. I have so many thoughts and so many to-do lists and so many ideas stored in my head, dangerously brewing together, creating a time bomb.

It is for this reason alone that I simply cannot handle twitter.

Most of you know that you can't go to twitter for 30 seconds without the entire page refreshing, with new tweets. Time defies physics in Twitterland, because it literally does go faster. News is more than instantaneous. It's already five seconds behind you.

I'm going to sound really mean right now and I don't care. But I think the worst thing about twitter is not that it's too much news, too fast. It is simply too much brain shit too fast.

People go on Twitter because they think people truly care that they're eating a salad for lunch. For some reason, they want the entire world to know that they're sitting at the Most Boring Stoplight In The World. And they tweet this crap ALL DAY LONG. It clogs my newsfeed, filtering out the actual news.

It is human nature to feel we are the center of the world. We crave attention. We are born egotistical. But believe it or not, the world does not revolve around you. Twitter dangerously feeds people this unrealistic idea though.

Instead of actually living life, there are millions of people who spend practically every minute of every day tweeting about it to other people, who in turn are tweeting their life to them. It's a never-ending cycle of people who want attention requesting it from other people who want attention.

It's too exhausting and ridiculous for me to handle.

So, I stay away from my twitter page. I get news alerts on my phone, so I'm properly updated when a famous person unexpectedly dies or if a natural disaster has created chaos. I can see status updates on Facebook, to inform me of my friends' important life events. I have my blog, so I can milk my ego, without forcing it on the world every five seconds.

Of course, I still have my twitter page. If it's the easiest way for you to contact me, use it. I'll get an e-mail telling me to go there. That's not a big deal. That's pretty much all I use twitter for anyway.

But don't expect me to give a damn about your salad.

I don't have time for that shit.

You are honestly my hero. I think I've gone on a million twitter-related rants since I first heard about it, and yet you've articulated my thoughts better than I ever could.

I can't stand status updates. I've had a Facebook for I don't know how many years and I've never posted a status update. I barely care what I'm doing most of the time. How could anyone else....although I did want to tell you about the deeeeeeelicious salad I polished off about an hour ago...

oh yeah...and 'brain shit'. Just know that I'm irate that you came up with that before I did. You're too good sometimes...it's not fair.

LMFAOOO!!! I have a twitter account but only post 1-2 tweets a day. That's it. The post from my blog. And if someone responds. HAHAHA I don't have a lot of personal peeps on there. I do have a lot of news and businesses. But I don't check it all the time. Great post girl!

"the biggest lesson I have learned in life is that time fucking flies" - you are so profound. This post is worryingly true although I use Twitter for professional purposes - in fact these days it can be the only way I can get quotes from folks - so tweet me about your salad.....

Whoa, way to go hurting my feelings J-Fab.

I am the centre of my world, therefore, from my vantage point, I'm the centre of your world and everybody elses.

How can people not want to know how green my salad was today or how splendid the stoplight at the end of our road?

I'll level with you... I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about because I've never been on Twitter. For that matter, I have never been on Facebook either, and I'm a young adult too.

Is that weird?

Oh thank you. I wish some tweeters would read this. I HATE those tweets and/or fb status reports about what someone's eating for lunch, their kid's latest accomplishment, or how they are so excited to have done blah blah blah on the job. Worst one yet? "My husband's giving me a foot massage right now." It's maddening.

Great one Jenny ;-) Funny, a student of mine was trying to convince me that I should be on Twitter just this morning. I guess I won't, after reading this. I do not care what color your salad was, but I am dang happy you chased those ducks at the park to forcefeed them with stale bread. Ha! ha! Guess I will hang on to old FB for a while. How would I keep up with you otherwise? ;-) Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

Like most technology, Twitter is a tool. A content-neutral tool. Some abuse it the way you describe with the negative effects you cite; however, one can use Twitter in a positive way. I've find a way to do that.

Your observation about time flying is sound and, as we age, it seems to fly even faster. Just yesterday I was 32...

I joined twitter when it first came out. Haven't been on it in years.

I'm starting the feel the same way about pinterest. It's getting TOO big.

yes agreed x10000. The only reason why I have a twitter was because I was forced to make one when I entered that R29 contest and I just...kept it around? I don't understand how someone can just wait time browsing twitter because it just seems like such a headache! So many people posting snippets of thoughts or responding to conversations that you can't see unless you click for more info and ugh.

After reading this post I am so happy that I am not addicted to twitter. The first time I joined twitter I had a dummy account for almost an year.
After I started blogging, I used it to follow a few bloggers and update everytime I posted something on my blog. But that's about it.

I am so happy I haven't gotten addicted like some of the others. I'd rather talk to a friend face to face and tell her what salad I've had than tweet about it.

I use twitter about once a week, or whenever someone tweets directly at me. I like it for networking and knowing about events, but I skim all of the "salad" garbage haha

I use Twitter, but mostly to keep up with food trucks. True story.

I hear ya! Although, I'm sucked in on Twitter and need Twit rehab. But I have realised that Twitter is kind of a waste and I've been cutting down. Also, going on Twitter when something big in the world is happening is probably the single worst thing to do. I avoid all social media then, and only focus on the news.

Oh J! I think this might be for the first time but I do not agree with you here ... while yes there are people like that on twitter, but there are people like that on facebook, on blogs and even in real life too (who just wldn't shut up about their f'ink life!) ... I have been on twitter since 07' when no one was there and I used to use it for venting my scandalous thoughts and then everyone got on it ... and I still use it to say things I cannot say to people's faces, 'coz the best part is that you don't use name and its not directed at anyone so all shit flies. And of well, I don't rely on it for the news, but I do rely on it for juicy gossip with anecdotes .. you just gotta follow the right people! :P

Funny enough I say the same thing about people's FB statuses (I think it's worse there with people talking about their kid's bowel movements and whatever).
At least I post useful stuff like deals or stories.

That or I tweet with others. Shall we tweet and make fun of other people talking about lunches? ;)

Aw, I know what you mean, but I luuuurve twitter, mostly because I use it as IM for bloggy people. I don't really read everything everyone says all the time. Just what some people say SOME of the time. That doesn't really make any sense, does it?

aw, couldn't agree more!

i hate it (i'm terrified) when i realize how fast the time goes by!

I've told you before that the reason why I'm not on any social networks anymore is because of the bad experiences I've had. But I also share some of your own feelings about Twitter. I've never had an account because I honestly think it's a waste of time.

Sometimes I think it would be funny (if I had a twitter) to do fake tweets to make fun of those over-tweeters. My boyfriend did that a few times on facebook when he had one. He wrote things like "Taking a shit" on his updates. It was clearly a joke, but you'd be surprised how many people thought he was actually doing that. Judging by how personal some of these people's updates are, they might as well be telling us exactly when they're taking a shit. I mean SERIOUSLY.

Oh no! I posted a photo of my salad 2 weeks ago. Hahaha! Must delete. Now.

I LOVED this post! I couldn't agree more. I'm glad I'm not the only person who is completely baffled by the whole idea of twitter. I only recently signed up on twitter and the constant flow of tweets every time I refresh the screen just gives me a headache.
