Update & Pinterest

It is a blistery fall morning here in my sprawling midwestern metropolis.

There is a harsh wind roaring outside my kitchen window and the sky is a whitish gray.

I'm bundled up in a wool blanket, sipping steaming chai, surrounded by kleenex.

My allergies have been severe all summer and now that fall is here, they're even worse. I'm completely miserable.

I haven't really updated you on my life recently, so here I am.

These days I have been freelancing for a smaller newspaper, filling in for a reporter who is on maternity leave. I'm back to covering city council meetings and writing feature stories, which is fun. The town I'm covering is about an hour away from here, so it is a little bit of a drive, but totally worth it. I love being back in the game.

This weekend, I'm actually covering a couple events, so I'll be kind of busy.

I have also been spending a lot of my free time pinning.

I've been on pinterest for a while now, but I just added a button to my sidebar in case you want to follow my boards.

Anyway, that's really all I have to say for now...

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

7x7 Award (pimptastic edition)

My best friend and possible soulmate, David, over at Brits in the USA, recently tagged me in the 7x7 Award.

Participating in this award has forced me to go back and look at my old posts from the past two and a half years. In other words, it makes me see what a fucking dork I am.

Anyway, here’s how it works – list your top posts under these categories and then pass the award on to seven others.

Most Beautiful: I'm not sure if this is the most beautiful post I've ever written but I put my heart and soul into Lilies and Roses, an essay about my grandmother's passing.

Most Helpful: Last year, I wrote a post about my generation, the Millennials. I did actual research and shit. The post ended up inspiring a college research paper for one of my readers, and for the next two weeks I was bombarded with authors/publishing companies who wanted to send me books about the topic, so I could review them. Check it out if you're bored: I'm a Millennial, hear me...meow?

Most Popular: In February 2010 I was miserable. I had just been let go from my reporting job at the newspaper and I was feeling severely unattractive. My post Everything Looks Perfect from Far Away marked the first time I ever received more than 100 comments. It was obvious a lot of girls could relate to it. Another post I ♥ Barbie drew the most comments I ever received for a single post (excluding giveaways).

Most Controversial: Fortunately, I have never had a post which sparked negativity from my readers (at least not that I'm aware of). But I have posted about controversial topics before, such as religion and racism. My post Why Do You Hate Me? addresses a racist attack I faced. My post Sinned Much? exposes people who use religion as a weapon.

Most Surprisingly Successful: I'm not gonna lie, I was a little nervous to post Parody of a Fashion Blogger. After all, the majority of my followers are fashionistas. It ended up receiving more than 1,000 hits in one day! My most recent post Fast Times at Wikipedia High came in at a close second.

Most Underrated: Crazy shit always happens to me. In April of 2009, one of my best stories only got SEVEN comments. Of course, I only had like 10 followers at the time, but still. Please read I am a mother!. It would just make my day.

Most Prideworthy: I went through a small phase where I started posting my (lame) poetry. This is a side of me I had always kept private. Like, very private. So I'm proud I had the guts to do it. The post cleverly titled My Poem regards the negatively charged political climate at the time. Friendship Suicide is way more personal.

I'm going to bestow this award upon seven other bloggers who I know get as much orgasmic pleasure in talking about themselves as I do:

Life in Quotations

Glam Kitten's Litterbox

Amber's Mouthwash

The real mean girl

Love Life Project

Melanie's Randomness

Stumbling Towards Nirvana

I hope you're having a great week, kiddos.

Fast Times at Wikipedia High

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the internet was the real world? And social media sites were...people?

Oh, I'm the only weirdo here? Well, welcome to my twisted little imagination.
Hello kids! Welcome to Wikipedia High School. We have the bestest and brightest students in the virtual world. Let me introduce you!

Facebook

Hey everyone! I really hate to brag, but oh, what the heck. I'm so pretty. I'm the most popular girl in school. There I said it, hehe. :) I have so many friends! And every time I say how awesome my day has been, 20 of my closest friends immediately like it! They give me thumbs up and make comments which make me feel special. :) I just want to be everyone's friend because I'm so nice and I'm so cool. I love sharing photos of myself with everyone, even people I haven't spoken to in years. I'm really pretty. Did I mention that? :)

LinkedIn

I'm going to get straight to the point. I'm not here to make friends, I'm simply here to do everything I can to get into Harvard. I'm the senior class president, I'm president of the Latin Club, vice-president of the Chess Club, and a proud member of the Wikipedia Business Leaders of Tomorrow League. I'm also class valedictorian. While most of my uninspired classmates are more interested in watching cat videos over at Youtube, I spend every waking moment trying to be as professional as possible. Even if it means polishing my resume every single night until graduation.

Twitter

@you sorry super busy but wanted to say I'm editor of the @wikipaper and always have the scoop on all gossip/news. Have millions of friends and strangers who always want to chat. LOL

Craig's List

Some people call me that pothead skater boy who deals herbal candy to children behind the bleachers, but man, that's just not the whole picture, man. I hook people up with necessary shit! Need a bike for ten bucks? Meet me behind the bleachers after school and I'll hook you up. Want to sell your mom's jewelry so you can support your heroin habit? Fuck yeah, meet me behind the bleachers and I'll hook you up. Looking to get laid? Meet me behind the bleachers and...

Google +

Yes, I'm the baby at Wiki High. I'm a freshman. It really sucks because when I first came to this school, everyone wanted to be my friend! Everyone kept saying I was prettier and cooler than Facebook! I thought I was going to be the most popular girl at school. And now I'm so sad because people finally figured out that I'm not that cool. They call me boring and no one hangs out with me anymore. Most of the people who begged me to be their friend a few months ago have now forgotten I even exist. They walk past me in the hallways without even looking. Will you be my friend?

Flickr

Look outside your eyes, friends! Every day is a new beginning and every night is a rebirth. Cleanse yourself with knowledge and the visual beauty which awaits you at every turn. If you are feeling inspired, bring your Holga to the quad after school. A group of us hike to the stars and snap our dreams with the click of a button. If you're a spiritually and physically beautiful female, perhaps we could share an existential moment.

Myspace

So, you're probably staring at my photo and thinking "damn, that bitch is old" and you know what, you're right. I'm 24 and technically, shouldn't even be at Wiki High Anymore. But fuck you, I just don't want to leave. When I first came here in 2003, I was the most popular girl in high school. But then that stupid slut Facebook transferred here and fucked it all up for me. And ever since that bitch stole my Homecoming crown, all I've been doing is drinking whiskey straight out of the bottle and having sex with any sleazeball who picks me up. And since I don't have friends anymore, I basically just hang out with no-name rock bands. I guess you could call me the ultimate groupie. Oh, FYI: Don't sleep with Craig's List. Asshole gave me a virus.

...well, what do ya think?

Guest Post: Fabulous, Baby!

Below is a guest post written by my adorable bestie, Jonny. It chronicles his recent adventure in New York City. Enjoy!

Hi friends of Jennifer Fabulous! I am very honored by Jenny's invitation to write a guest blog about my recent travels to New York! And she ALWAYS spoils me with her posts about our adventures together--including my birthday! Thanks for all the birthday wishes, everyone!

For those of you who've never been to the Big Apple: what are you waiting for? The theaters, dining -- and for those who are faithful followers of this blog-- the FASHION! It's nothing but fabulous!

Speaking of fabulous, I was a busy boy working and relaxing! I try to have a healthy mix while I'm on vacation! I was able to hit all of my favorite stores while I was in town including Forever 21 Men (Times Square has the largest men's department) and H&M on 5th Avenue. The good news is I didn't do as much damage as I usually do. I only bought a few shirts, ties and gloves!

I saw five Broadway shows including:

It was so nice to be able to see polished shows with really talented people! Unbeknownst to me, one of the people I used to work with back in 1998 is now in Memphis. We talked afterward and he even introduced me to the star of the show, Chad Kimball.

Memphis is one of my all-time favorites but my two new favorite shows are Follies and Sister Act. Follies stars Bernadette Peters and Jan Maxwell, who did wonderfully, but the real stars were Elaine Paige and Rosalind Elias, who is an 82-year-old opera veteran!

Here is Elaine performing "I'm Still Here."

Here is Rosalind performing "One More Kiss" with Leah Horowitz.

Truly great theatre!

You can check out their performances here:

Elaine

Rosalind

Sister Act featured brand new music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Here's Patina Miller singing my favorite song, "Fabulous, Baby!" as Deloris van Cartier:

Great shows weren't the only items on the itinerary. I did a photo shoot, which Jenny blogged about, but here are some behind the scenes photos!

I also did some other touristy stuff like going to Rockefeller Center's Top of the Rock observatory and posing for pictures at Battery Park with my friend Maryruth, buying some fabrics at Mood Designer Fabrics (like Project Runway) with my cousin Katie, and eating at a vegan restaurant and Junior's Deli.

Fortunately I got out of there before the earthquake and Hurricane Irene, but I hope to be back very soon! Can't help being fabulous!

9/11/11

I was a senior in high school.

My 17-year-old mind was filled with college applications, graduation requirements, and auditioning for the winter play. School had only been in session for a month and I was already feeling overwhelmed with responsibility. My main concern was surviving my final year of high school without having a nervous breakdown. Oh, that and finding a prom date.

That morning I sleepily stumbled out of my calculus class and headed straight for psychology. The classroom was eerily empty and the television was on.

I glanced at the screen, curiously, because I noticed mega-anchor Peter Jennings was speaking, which meant breaking news. A few seconds later, I realized it was a plane crash. A few minutes later, after my brain put together the pieces, I realized the truth.

For the first and only time in my life, I was literally paralyzed. I just sat there, staring straight ahead, with tears streaming down my face.

Before I knew it, I watched, live, as the second plane crashed into the second tower. The ABC cameraman started screaming and the camera started shaking, from his shock.

Was this real? I felt like I was watching an action film. But I wasn't.

Students started trickling in the classroom, giving me strange looks for my appearance.

"Why is she crying?" I heard one girl whisper to another.

As they started to watch the television, however, they grew quiet.

For the rest of the day, nothing else mattered. Everyone talked about it. I remember, in a daze, hearing a stupid cheerleader in my English class remark, "It's those fucking Mexicans, isn't it? I knew they were out to get us!"

When I got home, my parents were already in front of the television, watching the images in horror. Planes colliding with glass and steel. Men on fire jumping out of 20-story windows. Peter Jennings interviewing taxi drivers. Family members begging to know about their loved ones at the Pentagon. And what really did happen aboard that plane which crashed in Pennsylvania?

Tucked away in my little Cleveland suburb, I did not know anyone who had been a victim, but I still felt like my world had collapsed. The world had changed, I could feel it. The air felt strange. The sky looked different. Life had grown one shade darker, permanently.

My friend, Erin, came over that evening and we sat on my porch swing. We didn't even talk, we just sat there, each lost in our own silent thoughts.

I realized my life was never going to be safe again. The United States can be touched. Terrorism was no longer international news. It was right here, before our eyes.

And I felt so ashamed that I didn't see it coming. "Who is this terrorist leader? What is that organization? Why am I just hearing about this now? Oh, it's because I'm a stupid teenage girl and I don't watch the news that carefully. But dammit, I know every single fucking thing there is to know about Britney Spears, don't I?"

I will never forget the chills I felt on that crisp September day. I will never forget the way my heart bled when I saw those gruesome images on television. I will never forget how hard I sobbed into my pillow that night when I thought of all the families who lost a loved one that day.

And now, ten years later, without even closing my eyes, I can still feel that cool fall breeze swaying the porch swing, back and forth, as I desperately grasped for an answer to a question I will never understand: why?

Where were you on 9/11?

Happy Birthday, Jonny!

I was the arts & entertainment editor at the university newspaper when he walked into the newsroom.

"I'm interested in joining the school newspaper and I was told to come here," he said, in a slightly southern drawl. He was 18 and absolutely adorable.

A couple weeks later, he approached me after a staff meeting. He wanted to cover the upcoming Barbra Streisand concert for my section. I was delighted. He also told me he loved my skirts and dresses.

"I work at the Gap, so any time you want to buy something, let me know and I'll use my employee discount," he said.

It was an offering of friendship that sealed the deal on fate.

Jonny and I have been best friends ever since.

And today is his 25th birthday.

I often feel sad that Jonny lives far away now. (Well, four hours away, ha). But, in reality, not everyone is as lucky as me. Not everyone has a best friend who is more than a best friend. He's my family.

He was there for me when my college sweetheart smashed my heart into pieces. He gave me a shoulder to lean on when I plummeted through comical dating disasters. He helped me stalk my current boyfriend. He offered distraction when I hit rock bottom.

I believe he would say the same about me.

Here is a look at me and Jonny throughout the years.

Happy birthday, Bunny! Love, your Jenny Benny. xoxo
