Like, as if!

When I was in sixth grade, my best friend Megan and I were desperate to see the hottest new movie in theaters, called Clueless.

The radio ads and television commercials were promoting the film like crazy and as 11-year-olds, we were dizzy with excitement and anticipation from all the hype.

We begged our parents on a daily basis to let us go to the film. Our parents even met each other over dinner to discuss whether or not they should allow us to go.

The verdict: Absolutely not.

Apparently the movie talked about "sex" and showed "drug use" or some shit.

Meg & I were crushed. We listened in misery as our older friends, in eighth grade, bragged about seeing the film with their boyfriends.

But our parents' disapproval didn't stop Meg & I from buying the film as soon as it hit VHS a year later. It wasn't too late. The top television show at the time was Clueless, so the movie was still a pretty big deal.

For three years straight, I went to middle school dressed as Cher. Pleated skirts. Feather pens. Mini backpacks. Mary Janes. I was a girl obsessed. I even had a Clueless-themed 13th birthday party!

I watched that movie every single day after school and on weekends. I am not exaggerating when I say I've seen that film over 100 times and to this day (although I have not watched it in a decade) I can recite the entire film by heart, quote by quote.

"Do you know what time it is?" "A watch doesn't really go with this outfit, Daddy..."

"So, what did you do in school today?" "Well, I broke in my purple clogs!"

"What the hell is that?" "A dress!" "Says who?" "Calvin Klein."

"Do you prefer 'fashion victim' or 'ensembly challenged'?"

"I'd like to see you have a little direction." "I have direction!" "Yeah, towards the mall..."

It was a movie that changed my life. That movie helped me blossom from a little girl who liked to dress up to a teenager obsessed with fashion.

I mean, check out this video to see all of Cher's outfits in 60 seconds:

Unbelievable, right? I would kill to have her entire wardrobe even now, almost 20 years later.

And imagine how excited I was to learn that my childhood film is being turned into a Broadway Musical this year. Click here for more information.

How cool is that?!

My 13-year-old self is hyperventilating right now.

Are you a fan of Clueless? What movie influenced your fashion in high school?

PS. Check out this Golden Girls parody of Clueless from the 1995 MTV Movie Awards. Omfg.

Absolutely! I loved that movie. Alicia Silverstone was irresistible. Poor Brittany Murphy. Wasn't that her big breakthrough role? I loved, loved Paul Rudd as the "big brother" who ends up being a little bit more than a brother to Cher. Merci for the memories, girl! I can't say that I dressed like Cher though. I was a bit older than you when the movie came out and already in the corporate world. I am sure that would have made my co-workers' day though! Ha! Veronique aka French Girl in Seattle

OMG YES!! Girl, I too was and STILL am obsessed with Clueless. I actually just saw it again last week. I love this movie. I too have all the lines memorized, and the year I went back to school (which was my first year in high school), my mother bought me a Cher outfit. In 6th grade my friends and I gave each other nicknames. I was "Ambular" although assured it was meant as no insult.

That movie changed my life!! I got the fever in 6th grade, and it lasted all the way through high
school! Clear back packs and purses, 5 inch high sketcher shoes, "As if!", and a subscription to 17 magazine. Yes, that's where it all started...

I loved clueless!!!! I only watched it for the first time a few months ago, and I'm hooked! It's like the Mean Girls of the nineties.

Ah! A post after my own heart. YES, I'm pretty sure Clueless single-handedly led to my full-blown obsession with Fashion and style-stalking! The Esprit vest and burgundy dress? Had it. The while long tunic blouse thing? Oh how I searched for months for a replica. I even had the CD. And yes, used the theme song for one of my HS video projects. *sigh*

Definitely one of my all-time favorite movies! I saw it for the first time when I was in fourth grade -- five years after its release and when I was WAY too young for it, haha. Luckily, every reference went straight over my head... Typical. And I would DIE for her wardrobe!

I LOVE that movie! I had a friend when I was little who would dress just like Cher. She would always get in trouble in school for wearing too short of dresses and high heels.

RIP Brittany Murphy. She was so pretty and funny. I met Cher once about 4 years ago at a winery I worked at. She is just as gorgeous as you see on TV. She was very nice too :)

Wow. It's been a long time...

I feel like we don't see Alicia Silverstone too much these days, right? I kinda miss her.

I'm excited about the Broadway adaptation. I'm going to have to go see that.

....and oh...it wasn't high school, it was actually college, but I remember Swingers had a huge influence on me in the mid/late 90s. It makes me sad in a way though when I see it now, because it seems so dated...sigh...

Your brought back such memories! I was a little older than you at the time and ran out and got every Clueless outfit I could get my hands on. I was a pink puffy furry little creature. Lol! I still have the VHS and maybe viewed it like oh a million times. Remember the rotating closet scene? XOXO

I do like CLUELESS too, but the movie that changed my fashion sense was Brad Pitt in FIGHT CLUB. Like seriously, he dresses so hip in that movie. He looks so cool.

As if!! I loved Clueless, still have it on both VHS and bought it on DVD last year. I like to think it shaped my entire snarky pop culture lexicon. Best lines ever.

Can you believe I have never seen it?! I don't know why, what is wrong with me? I must do something about this. I can't believe how well you know it, reciting the whole film, watching it over 100 times and having a theme birthday party! wow thats amazing must have been fun. The fashion looks fantastic. I remember mean girls having an impact on the way I wanted to dress.
